Assistive technology helps disabled kids find their voice

Computer-based technology that provides speech output is increasingly being used to assist children suffering from disabilities such as problems such as autism , Down syndrome, and cerebral palsy in communicating. In this interview published on Science Daily, Janice Light, distinguished professor of communication sciences and disorders at Penn State, explains the clinical potential of assistive communication technology.

 

 

PsycBITE

PsycBITE™ is a database that catalogues studies of cognitive, behavioural and other treatments for psychological problems and issues occurring as a consequence of acquired brain impairment (ABI). The types of studies contained on this database are Systematic Reviews, Randomised Controlled Trials (RCT), Non-Randomised Controlled Trials (non-RCT), Case Series (CS), and Single Subject Design (SSD).
 
 
Reports meeting five selection criteria are eligible for inclusion on PsycBITE: (1) the report is a full-length publication in a peer-reviewed scientific journal, (2) regarding populations with brain impairment of acquired aetiology, (3) who are older than 5 years of age, (4) receiving an intervention that targets a psychological consequence of ABI, and (5) the report contains empirical data regarding treatment efficacy.

Meditation may increase the thickness of the cortex

Science and Consciousness Review has interviewed brain researcher Sara Lazar on how meditation affects the brain. Lazar is the author of a recent study, in which magnetic resonance imaging was used to assess cortical thickness in 20 participants with extensive Insight meditation, a technique that involves focusing attention on internal experiences. Findings showed that brain regions associated with attention, interoception and sensory processing were thicker in meditation participants than matched controls, including the prefrontal cortex and right anterior insula. According to Lazar and her colleagues, these results provide preliminary evidence for experience-dependent cortical plasticity associated with meditation practice.
